Here is a live rendition of “The Enormous Room” by Michael Manring, my nominee for best bass player alive. Seriously, if you haven’t seen him play, this guy will knock your socks off.

Manring performs most of his tunes on a Zon Hyperbass, which he had customized to handle a variety of special tunings, to open up the cutaway for three-octave access, and to install auto de-tuners on all of the tuning pegs. I won’t go into all of the special ways he makes my jaw hit the ground, but let’s just leave you with a sample of his work.

Sorry about the video quality. This was recorded live at the NAMM show in the Zon booth several years ago. Regardless, keep in mind that this is live (i.e. a single take), and not even his most impressive work. But it’s a seriously pleasing song for the ears too!
